A New Chapter: An icon, redefined. A legacy, woven in fabric.
Change often comes with moments of profound reflection, as the fires raged and the sunny skies turned dark in January 2025. I sat in Manhattan Beach centering down meditating and staying as calm as possible as I witnessed giant red flames raging up darkened mountain sides, homes and communities turning to ashes and prayed for the wild things that called Santa Monica mountains home, where would they go? could they out run the flames? I pondered.
Centered and calm I put my meditation training into practice. I was not going to let what I was witnessing take me out of my center like it had in the past.
You see I had already personally experienced a fire of a different kind, In September of 19, 2022 I was up to the wee hours of the morning watching as Queen Elizabeth's coffin procession though London after her 10 day tour of Great Britain it was 3:00 am in Los Angeles and could barely keep my eyes open I suddenly become overcome with exhaustion and fell into bed. At 6:00 a.m. I was woken up with a call saying my design studio was on fire, my landlord texting me to get down there that the fire department and police were waiting. As it turned out at 3:00 am was when the Arson fire was started.
Shocked and disoriented I scooped up my dog and put her in my lap and held her close to my heart as we drove down the wide dark empty streets. Feeling totally alone as I headed towards an uncertain future, was it totally gone? or was something left? my mind raced.
The fire department was located only a few blocks away from the studio and earlier in the year they had insisted my landlord update the sprinkler system so when the Arson fire took off the sprinklers put it out and then the firemen showed up and sprayed with hoses and flooded the design studio.
To say I was heart broken was an understatement. I was numb, dumfounded and felt like I was being taught a cruel life lesson. All was not lost, the contents smokey and wet were ruined and the loss immense but the building was unharmed.
Luckily I had a strong staff that bolstered my confidence that we could pull through and because of them we did. the design studio was a refuge a place for them to come together as an extended family. Together we began rebuilding.
To me it seemed like a civil war was being raged in Downtown L.A. it seemed like the Movie Mad Max had come to life in 2022. During this 2022/23 time period many business downtown Los Angeles in warehouses like mine were being robbed, torched and burnt to the ground.
In order to protect my business I have never shared this story, I has taken up until this time to feel the will power and emotionally strong again. I just took the stance stay calm and carry on.
I was lucky that my losses only included inventory and material possessions and my building was still standing intact. I had a small insurance policy the allowed me to get going again but it has never been the same and we are slowly rebuilding.
Now in the spirit of the moment I feel inspired to rise up once again and ride the energetic rebirth of our City of Angeles. to become whole again as we collectively reimagine and rise like the phoenix from the ashes of transformation and destruction of the past.
In that spirit, I am humbled to share the beginning next chapter of our journey:
